Why Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Matters

Proper fire extinguisher maintenance is a regulatory requirement and could prevent a small fire from becoming a life-threatening disaster.

We help you stay ahead of common fire risks by addressing:

  • Mandatory service intervals: Annual inspections and monthly visual checks are required for all extinguishers.
  • Chemical recharging: Extinguishers must be recharged immediately after any use.
  • Expiration awareness: Most extinguishers last 10–15 years, but age, exposure, and damage can shorten their lifespan.
  • Audit-ready documentation: Every serviced extinguisher receives an approved tag with the inspection date, service technician ID, and next due date.

Certified. Trained. Trusted.

All of your fire equipment is inspected and tested in strict accordance with applicable codes and standards, including National and Provincial Building and Fire Codes, NFPA standards, ULC standards, manufacturer manuals, and FM Global requirements. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FIRE EXTINGUISHER INSPECTIONS & MAINTENANCE

How often should fire extinguishers be inspected?

Fire extinguishers must undergo a visual inspection every month and a full annual inspection by a certified technician, as required by NFPA 10 and Canadian fire codes. Everguard’s technicians ensure each unit is tagged, tested, and compliant with all safety standards.

What is included in a fire extinguisher inspection?

An inspection includes checking the extinguisher’s pressure gauge, hose, nozzle, and safety pin; ensuring proper mounting and visibility; verifying that it’s the correct type for the hazard; and confirming that it hasn’t expired or been tampered with.

When should a fire extinguisher be recharged or refilled?

Fire extinguishers must be recharged immediately after any use — even a small discharge. Everguard provides same-day or next-day refills for dry chemical, CO₂, wet chemical (Class K), and clean agent models to keep your building protected.

How long does a fire extinguisher last before it needs to be replaced?

Most fire extinguishers have a lifespan of 10–15 years. However, exposure to moisture, heat, or damage can shorten that timeframe. During each inspection, Everguard checks for signs of corrosion, wear, or low pressure that may indicate it’s time for replacement.

Does Everguard provide inspection tags and compliance reports?

Yes. After every service, Everguard applies a new inspection tag showing the technician ID, service date, and next due date. You’ll also receive a report documenting the condition and location of every extinguisher for audit and compliance records.
